Belarus’ top diplomat says Russian nukes deployed in Belarus for defense

September 27, Pozirk. Nuclear weapons represent “the only guarantee for sovereign states” amid “increased militarization and the current arms race,” Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryžankoŭ said yesterday in New York, the foreign ministry’s press office reported.
The official made this statement on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly at a high-level event marking International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
The deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons and Oreshnik ballistic missiles in Belarus is defensive in nature, Ryžankoŭ stressed in this context.
Minsk supports the development of reliable security guarantees for all countries, he said, calling for strengthening trust between states and an effective system of collective guarantees that would eliminate the need for nuclear weapons.
Alaksandar Łukašenka and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a deal on security guarantees last year. The document contains the commitment by the two nations to defend the Union State territory and border with “all available forces and means,” including Russian tactical nuclear weapons.
