Ex-prisoner to sue Belarus in US over reprisals

August 19, Pozirk. Belarusian-American lawyer Juraś Ziankovič plans to sue Belarus in a US court over reprisals after spending four years in a Belarusian prison, he said in Warsaw yesterday.
The case concerns the fate of “hundreds and thousands of Belarusians who have gone through [Alaksandar] Łukašenka’s torture chambers and who are demanding justice,” he said. “Our goal is simple and at the same time complex: to hold the regime and its officials legally responsible.”
Ziankovič’s lawsuit will target the Republic of Belarus, Łukašenka, the KGB and its senior officers, as well as prison officials, judges and prosecutors.
The Minsk Regional Court in September 2022 sentenced Ziankovič to 11 years in prison after finding him guilty of conspiracy to overthrow the government, forming an extremist group and incitement to hatred. He was released in late April with the help of US diplomats and left Belarus.
