July 21, Pozirk. Courts in Belarus’ Brest region have awarded damages this year against 62 technical school and university graduates refusing to show up for work as required by their compulsory job assignments, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The total amount of damages exceeded 650,000 rubels ($200,000).
For example, an Ivanava district resident failed to report to a farm in the Pinsk district after completing three years of free tuition studies at the Pinsk State College of Builders. His training costs exceeded 14,000 rubels, and the court ruled that he repay the amount to the government.
In a similar lawsuit, a court ruled to collect 14,500 rubels from another graduate, a resident of Ivacevičy.
The prosecutor’s office notes that defendants often evade payment, so it has initiated enforcement procedures.
Those receiving state-funded education at Belarus’ universities, vocational and technical schools are assigned mandatory jobs. University graduates must complete five or more years of compulsory employment, while technical school graduates must work for two years at the designated jobs.
