Lithuanian officials hide in shelter after drone incursion from Belarus

July 10, Pozirk. Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas and Seimas Speaker Saulius Skvernelis spent some time in shelters today after a drone crossed from Belarus into Lithuania and fell at around 11:30 a.m. approximately one kilometer from the border, LRT reported.
Initially, security services feared it was a Shahed attack drone, a type of unmanned aerial vehicles Russia uses against Ukraine. However, border guards said it was a UAV made of plywood and foam plastic without payload.
Giedrimas Jeglinskas, chairman of the parliamentary committee on security and defense, called for a probe into the incident.
He suggested that the UAV might have been used as a target during a Belarusian military drill. He urged the public to wait for more accurate information before jumping to conclusions. It is premature to call the incident a deliberate provocation, Jeglinskas said.
Dovilė Šakalienė, Lithuania’s defense minister, said the drone did not pose any threat. Lithuania spotted it when it was outside the country and had time to react, she added, noting that the incident was not a deliberate act.
