Łukašenka pardons 42 political prisoners

May 7, Pozirk. In addition to signing a general amnesty program for 7,630 inmates, Alaksandar Łukašenka has pardoned 42 political prisoners in connection with the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany.
The latter include 18 women and 24 men, 13 inmates with chronic diseases and one inmate with a disability, said the Belarusian ruler’s press office. Twenty-four have minor children, two have many children, 10 are over 50 and one is at the retirement age.
Since July 2024, Łukašenka has pardoned 292 political prisoners. At least 8,234 people have been prosecuted on political grounds since 2020, with 6,940 convicted and at least 33 sent for compulsory treatment, said the Viasna Human Rights Center.
