US sides with Belarus, Russia in voting against UN, CoE cooperation resolution

April 17, Pozirk. Nine countries, including Belarus, Russia and the United States, voted against the UN resolution on cooperation between the UN and the Council of Europe (CoE) yesterday at the UN General Assembly, according to the UN website.
The resolution was adopted with 105 votes in favor and 33 abstentions. Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Niger, North Korea and Sudan were also in the group that opposed it.
The resolution “repeats statements as to the Russia-Ukraine war that the United States considers unhelpful in advancing the cause of peace,” said Jonathan Shrier, representing Washington at the UN.
He was also critical of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), claiming that they “advance a program of soft global governance that is inconsistent with US sovereignty and adverse to the rights and interests of Americans.”
Meanwhile, Belarus actively supports the implementation of the SDGs and constantly reports on its progress.
The CoE consists of 46 European states and defined support for Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression as its priority.
The CoE expelled Russia in early 2022, while Belarus has never been its member. The US has observer status.
Last week, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution, calling for extending the jurisdiction of a special tribunal on aggression against Ukraine to cover “the alleged crimes of aggression committed by the so-called Belarusian leadership.”
Moscow and Minsk should be held accountable for their systematic use of torture and other ill-treatment, PACE said.
