Belarus’ election a challenge for Poland’s EU presidency – Tusk

December 5, Pozirk. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has mentioned the ongoing war in Ukraine, political destabilization in Europe, unrest in Georgia and upcoming presidential election in Belarus among the challenges facing Poland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2025.
“All this shows us what a difficult historical moment we will have to work at for the security of Europe,” Tusk told reporters in Warsaw, according to Gazeta Wyborcza.
He also touched on his idea to temporarily suspend the right to asylum for immigrants coming to Poland with the help of Alaksandar Łukašenka’s regime.
“I am glad that there are fewer and fewer opponents of the idea of protecting borders and that this is becoming our common thinking,” he said.
Earlier, the announcement of the new Polish migration strategy that includes a temporary, local suspension of the right to asylum caused a public outcry.
However, the Polish Office for Foreigners said the strategy will primarily affect those storming the border as part of hybrid warfare, not regular Belarusians coming to the country.
Belarus scheduled the seventh presidential election for January 2025.
