Five years after the disputed 2020 presidential election, Belarus looks dramatically different

Pozirk

Five years after the disputed 2020 presidential election, Belarus looks dramatically different:
• Political prisoners multiplied nearly 50-fold, while imprisoned journalists increased 37 times — with actual figures likely higher.
• All opposition parties and independent media covering politics are now banned.
• The country slid further down global media freedom (–13) and rule of law (–39) rankings, after Alaksandar Łukašenka openly urged police to break laws to suppress dissent.
• International sanctions now target 78 times more officials than in 2020, while relations with neighbors — except Russia — have collapsed.
• Belarus lost 300,000 people from its population and 125,000 workers from its labor force.
• The rubel plummeted, and prices grew 30-percent faster than in the five years before the election.
